The kedgeree seems to mutate much like my pasta and cabbage 'pizzochiete' first delivered by the good Ferdinand. This example was particularly fine, melting equal quantities of fennel and onion, then adding an un-recallable mixture of freshly ground spices, probably some coriander, cumin and mustard seed. I did put in some grated turmeric which was a revelation. my sister Rachel had brought it back from India. It is preserved somehow, and grates almost like nutmeg but the aroma is far more intense and interesting than the normal powdered stuff. Some wee brown prawns accompanied a smokie on this occasion, just brill. Oh yes, a little Tabasco to finish, as chili would mean poor Rory couldn't eat.

I had asked Shona to get crabs and asparagus from Johnshaven and Montrose respectively. Not really expecting a double, she delivered despite an ever expanding uterus. What a perfect summer meal ensued, boiled crab, chive mayonnaise, new potatoes (pink fir), asparagus, salad leaves from the garden and sourdough bread. Just to top it off, I bought some stupendous sparkling Montlouis from the Co-op for a fiver, well worth double that.

The sourdough is evolving, though I've still to get a lighter dough. I do like the resilient (Shona calls it rubbery) texture. The flavour is unsurpassable and it lasts forever, unlike the breadmaker bread which goes stale in a day.
